A Sunday Ride

Yesterday after church me and mamma went on what we call an "adventure bike ride". We weren't headed anywhere in particular we just wanted to ride somewhere interesting.

We have lived in this area for about three years but never explored much of our little "town". Every morning I am awakened by a train that I have never seen nor really thought about. Though at night when it comes through our town my hair stands on end at the blood curdling sound of coyotes howling.

I am in story book style going to tell you about me and mamma's Sunday ride.

It was one of those Sunday afternoons when the wind is blowing softly through the wheat and the sun is hung in a lazy fashion over the land. My siblings where busy entertaining themselves while dad worked on things in the yard. Momma jumped at the opportunity to get away and do something fun and different.

As we headed down the main rode in our town(called a town because it has a tiny post office),we saw wheat field after wheat field and cow after cow. I felt absolutely dreamy as I pedaled along. Momma and I had been down this road a lot so we decided to take a left into "down town". It appeared to be a little street speckled with a few old houses. Little did I know but I was embarking on a real adventure. The houses were absolutely precious!!!
They looked as though they had been built a hundred years ago with little picket fences and trellis entrances. I am a completely old fashioned girl so as we pedaled by the old homes I would imagine what stories those old homes could tell. What young mother rocked her little baby on that swing? what young boy scampered barefoot down the dusty street to school?

As I contently gazed about my mother almost squealed with delight as she saw that we were down town and best of all we saw the old street sign which read "Railroad Ave." We pedaled quickly as we felt we had been sent back through time into a old southern town where old men sat in patched overalls with a glass of sweet tea rocking back in forth in old rockers and girls played with dolls in the shade of an old oak.

Railroad Ave. was better than we expected. We saw what used to be old shops[ I think I saw an old general store] and we even saw the old train station!!! The people there were just as precious as the town. We saw many elderly ladies watering their beautiful gardens. Though my favorite person I saw was a little boy about 7 or 8 [If you know me you know that I absolutely love children ]. He was standing on the porch of his old run down home in a pair of faded blue jeans and t-shirt. As I was gazing at him he brought a smile to my face as I listened to him speak. A child across the street from him wanted him to come play. His response was so cute. "I can't come right know I wacthin' Bubba!" (We guessed "Bubba" was his little brother.) The whole experience from the people to the buildings was a nostaligic feel of an old southern town.

That afternoon will always linger in my mind and the feeling is something I can't put into words. I read a saying once that said, "A day in the country is better than a week in the city." An afternoon like this is enough to convince anyone!

I will always thank God for making me a country girl!
