God Opened A Door And I Tripped Over The Threshold

I have been trying to get this post published for almost a week! :)

God has blessed me with the opportunity to be a part of a local assisted living facility.  For the last couple of years I have been taking piano students at Christmas time to play music for the residents.  I always enjoyed interacting with the people and spending time getting to know them.  In January, my mom encouraged me to try and make a commitment to visit that assisted living home twice a month.
This particular home, I later learned, is owned and operated by Christians.

I started out visiting a couple of afternoons a month and when I would go I would just talk with them, play the piano, read the Bible, and pray with them.  Little did I know, but one of the social workers had been observing my visits and had told the owner of the company about me.  One afternoon last month as I was wrapping up my visit with the residents, a young man stopped me and asked me to step into his office.  I had been playing "balloon volleyball" (which was an absolute blast:) so I was rather hot and out of breath from chasing balloons for 15 elderly people in wheelchairs.  I proceeded to rather nervously enter the door that he was holding open for me when I managed to trip over the brick threshold....Talk about embarrassing! I really amaze myself. :/
He was super nice about it though and never let on that he knew I was nervous. haha

The first two things he asked me was, "What do you want to do with your life?", and "What are your career goals?".  So, out of breath and with no preparation what-so-ever, I officially began my first real "interview".  By the end of our discussion he had asked me to prayerfully consider the possibility of one day working for them.   I told him I would, shook his hand, and walked back to my truck feeling quite amazed and shocked.  I even managed to exit his office with a little more dignity than I had entered with. ;)
A week passed and I received a text message from him that his boss wanted to meet with me.  With a little input from the Mum, I picked out an outfit that included a smart pair of high heels. :)
While I drove over there, I asked the Lord to let His will be done and that if He wanted me there that HE would make it very plain to me. The interview was very relaxed and went extremely well.
The owner asked me to continue coming a couple of times a week and to plan activities with the residents. At the end of April he said we would meet again to see if I feel like this might be something I want to do.

If you are looking for a way for you or your family to get more involved in ministry, I would highly recommend visiting your local nursing home or assisted living homes.  It has been said that the loneliest people in America are the elderly.  The people are so grateful just to have someone sit down and talk with them.  If you can play a musical instrument, take it along and play before the most rewarding and grateful audience you will ever have the pleasure of playing for.

“Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord.” Leviticus 19:32

“Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.” Proverbs 23:22

Love you, dear reader!

So glad you are loving on those dear people! You are right...the elderly are the most lonely in the land...so forgotten.

I started playing for the worship service of a local nursing home when I was 16...that was 17 years ago! It has truly been a rewarding ministry and now my family goes with me. My children aren't afraid of "old" people and the residents love them so much...so many benefits to me...when I just started out to meet a need.

Love you!

For one Summer I was an Activities Director at an assisted living. It was a great experience and will still visit every once in a while and sing and perform songs for the residence. They love it.
Playing balloon volley ball with the residents was certainly great fun. :)

Keep up the great work! I know they appreciate it.

McKenzie, this is what God was calling you to do. All those piano recitals were just to get you comfortable and interested in working with the elderly community. And when God opens a door, we all usually fall on our faces because we can't believe we are actually witnessing His awesome majesty!!!!
