Memorial Day and The Littles...

Yesterday morning my Dad and my brother Matt left for a week long Scout camp. My mom and I decided since our two biggest "eaters" were gone we would opt out on cooking for Memorial day and take the littles to Chick-Fil-A for dinner instead. We told the younger ones that if they would help get the chores done we would take them to town that night. While my Mom went running I did some house work while I watched the littles. I was upstairs folding laundry when Mariah came running into our room and proudly showed me a picture she had colored for momma. After presenting it to me she quickly bounded back down the stairs to hang it on the front door. Shortly after that I heard my sisters having a rather heated discussion in the hallway. Mariah came bursting back into the room for the second time and announced that Madeline said that she was unappreciative. I told her to tell Madeline to come upstairs and told her to go play outside. Madeline came storming up the stairs and plopped on the bed. She crossed her arms and said,"Mariah is so unappreciative. She was getting a homemade popsicle from the freezer and when she saw what kind momma had made she wrinkled up her nose and said it looked gross. I told Mariah that she was being unappreciative of the fact that momma had made popsicles for us. She then said that she was to appreciative because she had made a sign on the door for Momma. I then told her that it didn't mean a thing that she made a sign for Momma when she wasn't showing gratefulness, and she got really mad." After Madeline finished her speech, I had a difficult time not busting out laughing. I managed to hold it in though and told her that I thought she was a being a little tough on Mariah. I explained that it was OK if Mariah didn't want that kind of popsicle because Momma had made them for whoever wanted them. Madeline eventually "cooled her jets" and we began discussing other things. Something was said about Memorial day and I told her that we needed to be mindful of those who had given their lives to protect our country. A few minutes later, I heard Mariah coming up the stairs. Before I left our room I encouraged Madeline to apologize for being harsh. I was in the boys room when I over heard Madeline talking to Mariah. I crept closer to the closed door so that I could hear what they were saying better. Madeline-"Mariah, I have two things I would like to say to you. One is that I am sorry for saying you were unappreciative. The other thing is that I am sick of this relationship. You know today is Memorial day and we should be thinking about the men and women that have given their lives for our country. So, for the rest of the day we are not going to argue but we are going to think about them and we are going to serve our family joyfully! Do you understand? I was just about to erupt with laughter when Mariah topped of their hilarious discussion with, "You sure don't sound like you are sorry to me!"

When I reenacted this scene for momma when she got back from running we both died laughing. Madeline and Mariah however.... did not find it very funny!:)

Well, later that evening we got everybody bathed and dressed and loaded up in the van. We were just about to turn into the Chick-Fil-A parking lot when Malachi announced that he didn't have any shoes. Momma turned around and said, "You are kidding." Malachi said, "Nope I'm not." Madeline turned around in her seat and confirmed that he indeed was barefoot. So off we went to Walmart to get a pair of flip-flops. Momma hadn't been in the store five minutes when Malachi yells across the van, "I found my shoes!!" "Malachi David!" I nearly yelled in exasperation. Poor Mommy is in Walmart trying to get you shoes when you had yours all along. He looked at me with a shocked expression and said, "Well it's not my fault."

We eventually made it to Chick-Fil-A and Malachi...well he now as an extra pair of flip-flops.

The End

I love how uncomplicated things are so complicated with kids....
I know how hard it is not to laugh at siblings sometimes when they need you to be serious... cute story! :)
Glad you had a fun Memorial Day! We don't have that holiday out here, but we have "Victoria Day" on Moday the week before Memorial Day.
Hope you have a great day!
Love you!
